Cassia Seed - Side Effects

Check the contents of your dietary supplements for harmful substances: Cassia Seed
(Latin: Cassiae Semen, Senna obtusifolia, Chinese Senna, Sicklepod, Foetid Cassia, Tora, Sickle Senna, CoffeePod, Tovara, Chakvad and other names)

Cassia obtusifolia is an old Chinese, Japanese and Korean Herbal Medicine, it is not a food supplement.

Cassia seed is among other things a vasodilator and acts as a laxative and oxytocic (a drug that induces labor by stimulating contractions of the muscles of the uterus) also used for treatment of ringworm, snakebite and the treatment of visual impairment.

According to a Chinese Government website, Cassia Seed should not be taken by pregnant women and should be used only under the supervision of a medical doctor. Cassia Seed (and extracts) are not a scheduled substance in South Africa and could be freely obtained and used in any quantity. It is currently, in my opinion incorrectly marketed as a food supplement.

Side Effects of Cassia Seed :
Can actually cause obesity. Also irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and psoriasis. It can also contract the uterus, and should be avoided by young or pregnant women.

Cassia seed has the potential to exhibit gastrointestinal side effects like gas, diarrhea and nausea along with drowsiness. As a central nervous system stimulant, anxiety and also muscle spasms. Since, cassia seed can lower a person's blood pressure, it is not recommended to be taken by people who are presently using blood pressure medications

Tests on Lab rats:
Intermittent mild diarrhea was found in high-dose animals and body weights of high-dose males were decreased to week 10. Myeloid hyperplasia with peripheral leukocytosis, thrombocytosis and mild anemia.

Chemicals in Cassia Seed :
The natural anthraquinones emodin, chrysophanol and physcion are researched now as human carcinogens. (exacerbation or propogation of CANCER)
1,8-Dihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone, (C15 H10 O4)
chrysophanol - (used as a laxative),
emodin (used as a laxative),
physcion - (used as a laxative and also as the main ingredient used to treat crops for the control of plant fungus, powdery mildew)

It is probable that one or more of the above natural anthraquinones could be genotoxic.

More chemicals in Cassia seed:
obtusin, Aurantio-Obtusin, Glucoaurantio-Obtusin, chryso-obtusin, (Mostly used for colouring and as dies) - Obtusin effects on humans requires more research.

Retinoic Acid: Vitamin A works via its biochemical derivative (Retinoic Acid) in the body and has little direct effect on the human body. Retinoic Acid is also the chemical in Cassia Seed responsible for its application as a herbal cure for eyes and cornea. It is known to cause INFERTILITY in female rats when ingested (non topical application), whether it could affect female humans in the same way is undetermined as yet. Retinol is also a common and well known active ingredient in skin care products (Vitamin A)

Cassiaside: (nor-rubrofusarin-6--D-glucoside) - beneficial effect on postprandial blood glucose control which may be partially mediated by stimulated insulin secretion from the pancreas of diabetic lab-rats as far as the author can establish, further studies are currently continuing. Sofar, in rats, Cassia Seed affects the amounts of insulin secreted from the pancreas.
